A Day In the Life of a Tarot Reader.

Studying the Tarot

What is a “day in the life” of a professional tarot reader like! Well, never boring, that’s for sure! I’ve been a student of Tarot for many years. I learnt under a mentor who rarely discussed the intuitive side of Tarot. We studied symbolism, numerology, Jungian theory and deep dives into all the possible meanings of the cards and their combinations. So, my study of Tarot had been highly theoretical and mainly academic. We’d lay down a spread and read what was there. The readings were always accurate, but every now and then my teacher would come out with a comment that was mind blowing and have nothing to do with the cards on the white board. Where the hell did that come from?

It wasn’t until I started working professionally and doing several readings a day that my intuition took hold in earnest. I started seeing patterns and “hearing” different definitions for cards that appeared to be totally random and nowhere to be found in Tarot books. It’s usually these moments that make my clients gasp and look at me in shock or burst into tears. This happens regularly, but truth be told, it still catches me by surprise every time.  Let me share some examples of readings in a day in the life of a tarot reader.

Tarot Reader

A Typical Day in the Life

A while back I had a client come to me because her beloved German Shepherd had passed away and she was convinced that the puppy she was picking up in a few week’s time was going to be this dog reincarnated. She wanted confirmation from the tarot cards. Um… ok. I decided to give it a go, even though I felt totally out of my depth with this assignment. This is when my Spirit Team really seem to step forward and hold my hand in guidance.

I shuffled and gently placed three cards on the table. The Moon, The Fool and the Ten of Pentacles. I stared at these three seemingly unrelated cards and tried to make sense of  them in the context of the question. Then it hit me! There are only three cards in the entire tarot deck (Rider Waite Smith) that have an image of a dog or dogs in them and here they all were lined up before me. Woah! I pointed this out to the client, and she started crying.

I continued with the reading. The remaining cards were all about love and returning home. There was no doubt in my mind that this client’s dog was somehow coming through and announcing her impending arrival in the form of another German Shepherd puppy. I kept shaking my head and smiling because I was just as blown away by this as the client, who was exclaiming,

I knew it! I knew it!”

Coincidence? Perhaps, but also not unusual in a day in the life of a tarot reader.

Past Life Reading

I recently did a gorgeous reading for a couple who were madly in love. They had had to overcome a number of obstacles to end up together and wanted me to do a “past life” reading for them because they felt they had been destined to be together and they had somehow “recognised” each other when they first met.

I recommended that we do two separate readings. One for him and one for her. I felt there was more information to be had that way and without the other individual in the room, no feelings had to be spared and the discussion could be open and honest.

He went first. I dealt the cards. The past showed the hardships they had endured. The present was all about joy and love. Next, I looked at what was hidden or not yet evident to the client. The Hierophant, The High Priestess and The Wheel of Fortune.

Before I could stop them, out of my mouth came the words, “It looks like in a past life you were a high-ranking religious figure like a cardinal or a bishop and your partner was a nun. It was a great love, but you had to carry out your love affair in a clandestine manner down dark corridors, as it was forbidden”.

This client was a man of very few words, but his eyes welled up and he simply nodded. The Wheel of Fortune confirmed this was merely one Karmic cycle they had shared together. The outcome was Judgement. Their Karmic journey was over, and their souls could now come together for a shared purpose in this physical life. Awwww!

She was next. I shuffled thoroughly and as per usual, cut into three and got her to choose the pile to deal from. What is hidden…The Hierophant, The High Priestess and The Wheel of Fortune!!! Outcome…Judgement!!! Get outta town! I was freaking out, but the client had no idea why.

“This is the exact same reading as *Ryan’s!”, I shrieked.

I told her what I told him. Cardinal, nun, blah blah blah.  She looked at me and calmly said,

“I told Ryan those exact words one year ago. I just knew it on some level”.

He had not given this away, but they had discussed this exact scenario between themselves for over a year and were looking for confirmation. Well knock me down with a feather! I still don’t consider myself to be particularly intuitive or even psychic, but miraculous moments like these happen all the time in a  day in the life of a tarot reader and I revel in the power of the Universe to ensure the message gets across.

Serendipity At its Finest.

Sometimes Spirit does something amazing outside of a reading as well. Just yesterday I was working at my regular gig at a witchy magick shop. A client, let’s call her *Rosita Smith, had been a “no show” twice before and had now rescheduled for my last appointment of the day at 4:30pm. I had been booked solid all day and at 3pm asked the staff in the shop to call Rosita to make sure she was coming in.

I finished my second last reading for the day and walked downstairs hoping to collect Rosita for her reading. She wasn’t there. She didn’t answer her phone. 4:30pm came and went. I was prepared to wait 10 minutes and then I was going home. It had been a long day and this lady did not have a great track record with me. Suddenly, a curly haired, brunette and her friend walk through the door of the shop.

The staff member and I called out in unison, “Are you Rosita?”

She looked visibly shocked and spluttered, “Yes, I am”.

“You’re running a little late”, I said as politely as I could muster.

“Late for what?”, she queried.

“For your reading”, I whined.

She looked confused.

Suddenly it dawned on me. “Are you Rosita Smith?”, I asked.

“No, I’m *Rosita Jones”, she replied. Oooooh!

She had come across the store by chance and popped in on a whim after visiting a gallery.

We all decided this woman needed a reading stat. In fact, she had been agonising over a decision for weeks and was desperate for some clarity but hadn’t known where to turn. It appeared that the Universe had sent her to me in the most splendidly serendipitous way! If she had turned up just 5 minutes later, I would have been on my way home or more poignantly, Rosita number one might have actually turned up for her appointment. I am happy to say she left with a clear plan of what she needed to do. Satisfying!

There Must Be Something to it.

Some of you might be surprised to hear that I am married to a sceptic. In the evening, as we have dinner, I sometimes recount the positively fantastic things that have happened during the day (anonymity ensured of course). He shakes his head and usually says something like,

“Unbelievable, but there are just too many examples like this. There must be something to it.”

And yes, I don’t know what, but there MUST be something to IT. Somehow the cards align and somehow the words come to me and somehow the right person appears at the right time so that Spirit/God/the Universe can get their message through. I am so grateful to play just a small part in relaying that message on just a day in the life of a tarot reader.
